Project 15

Statement/
Art is entangled in a crisis of meaning.

One/ It is evident that nothing about art is evident anymore—neither its inner life, nor its connection to the world, nor even its right to exist. At best, art can aid us in resisting the objectification and totalitarianism that are unfolding in today’s society. It is through works of art that the condition of the human—both as individual and as a social being—can be revealed, exposing the inadequacies, fractures, contradictions of social life, and the alienations within it.

Two/ Engaging with works of art through imagination is the most complete and seductive substitute for understanding them. In the contemporary condition, it must be understood that “artworks” are fundamentally incomprehensible. Those who approach art solely through the tools of understanding reduce it to something simple and accessible—something far removed from what it truly is. Progress in technique does not necessarily mean progress in art.

Nilper Orchestra has continued its cultural and artistic struggle for fifteen years, despite the many difficult days and challenging conditions of creative activity in this land.
We at Nilper Orchestra have always believed that artistic works can and must have a critical and liberating approach.
Throughout our journey, we have resisted reducing our artistic pursuits to mere means of livelihood, to commodified products, or to submission under the constraints of the so-called “art industry.” Instead, we have endeavored to engage with art through artistic practice rather than artistic fabrication, aiming to create meaningful impact.

Now, in these turbulent social and political times, we find our calling more vivid than ever: to carry forward this path with greater insistence and greater devotion—and to remain faithful to what we believe art can still awaken.

About

Nilper Orchestra was founded by Navid Gohari in 2004 for performing contemporary classical music. The Orchestra’s continuous aspiration is performing art music of both Iranian and international contemporary composers while – as the members of the orchestra – bringing together talented performers and raising the level of artists living and working in Iran. Since its establishment, the orchestra has performed regularly in seasonal programming and its thirteen years of activity, has performed 28 full concerts, performing 58 works in repertoire of contemporary music, 23 world or national premieres, and has hosted 10 soloists. Since 2008, Ehsan Tarokh has been responsible for the orchestra’s managerial activities. Nilper is focused on introducing and performing the rare repertoire of high quality, observing international rules of copyright and interaction with publishing houses, and inviting and hosting established artists and soloists from around the world. These all mark the concept, philosophy, and approach of the board of directors in Nilper Orchestra.
